Mustang Public Schools (MPS) Issues Professional Development Stipend To Employees

(Mustang, Oklahoma – December 13, 2021) – At the regular meeting of the Mustang Public Schools Board of Education held on Monday, December 13, 2021, the Board approved a Professional Development stipend of $1,000 for all full time employees and $500 for any part time employees; the stipend will utilize one-time federal ESSER funds and will be paid prior to Winter Break.

Just before the beginning of this school year, the District increased the amount of money in each step on the certified pay scale which brought the base pay of a first-year teacher to $45,397.30 (including benefits); and now are providing this one time stipend to employees. In a video sent to staff just after the Board voted, Bradley thanked the School Board, and told employees that this stipend was a thank you from the Board for all that they had done in service to Mustang students.

The stipend does come with a bit of a catch, though: “employees cannot receive ‘extra’ pay unless they provide ‘extra’ services of some kind,” Superintendent Charles Bradley said.  As such, to receive their stipend check, staff must participate in a professional development activity requiring review, study of, and feedback on a new Employee Wellness website/initiative called “Broncos Empowered” or #BE for short (  “These past couple of years have been hard on everyone, and we have heard repeatedly of the need for employee resources for self care, mental health, and the like,” Bradley said.  “We hope that this website is the start of a program that can benefit our employees by providing a hub for resources in those areas.”

Board President Todd Lovelace added that he is “in awe of the staff of MPS and their dedication to their students.  Our people show up each day, go above and beyond, and do whatever it takes to make sure our students are cared for and that they are learning in a safe environment.  The level of compassion that they show each day would take a toll on anyone, so we are excited to see how this new employee wellness initiative might be able to help.”

Mustang staff and students end the Fall 2021 semester on Friday and are on Winter Break until January (January 3 for staff; while students return on Wednesday, January 5, 2022).
