My name is Lynda Langford. I have
been teaching
Spanish for over 30 years
to children,
teenagers, and adults. I
grew
up
in Argentina
with missionary parents,
and returned to Oklahoma to attend
college
at Southern
Nazarene University. After completing my
degree in Elementary Education and Spanish,
I did graduate
work in Bilingual ED and ELL
at the
University of Central Oklahoma.
My husband and I,
along with our two
children have lived, worked and traveled
in many of
the Spanish-speaking countries. My husband
is now retired and our children are grown. Our daughter
teaches school in Texas. Our son is a pilot out of Phoenix, AZ with America West/US Airways. They both
use their Spanish in their work and are thankful that they had the opportunity to learn another
language.

It is a delight to teach Spanish to the 4th and 5th graders at
Mustang Centennial Elementary. How thrilling to watch their excitement when
they understand something being said in Spanish. They work hard
during their 45 minutes each
week, to build a foundation. We
cover basic vocabulary and phrases, learn about the 21
Spanish-speaking countries, their locations and cultures, and
find ways to use what we are learning. Fourth and fifth graders
know that language learning is "brain exercise." It strengthens
their ability to learn other subjects. They also know it will
benefit them now and in the future. I hope that some day there
will be an Ambassador to a Spanish-speaking country from
Mustang...or a scientist who works in the Central American
rainforest who discovers a plant that will provide us with
medicine that will cure a dreaded disease...or an archeologist
who discovers the lost tribe of the Incas in Peru. There is no
end to the possibilities for a child who begins early on the
road to being bilingual.
It is a joy for me to start them on
the journey!
Mrs. Langford teaches at Centennial
on Thursdays and Fridays.
