Mustang Public Schools (MPS) Issues 1.5% Professional Development Stipend To Employees

(Mustang, Oklahoma – March 9, 2020) – At the regular meeting of the Mustang Public Schools Board of Education held on Monday, March 9, 2020, the Board approved a Professional Development stipend of 1.5% for all employees (excluding contractors, vendors, consultants, those who left employment prior to March 9, 2020, and the Superintendent) that will be paid prior to Spring Break.

“The stipend will be calculated on base pay for every employee including our half time employees,” said Chief Financial Officer, Nancy McKay.  “The 1.5% will mean an average stipend of approximately $475.” Mustang currently employs 814 Certified Employees, 607 Support Staff, and 60 Administrators.  Staff eligible for the stipend were designated as anyone “who is currently on an employment contract with the district (as of March 9, 2020) and is considered a certified, support, or administrative employee of the district.  Just before the beginning of this school year, the District increased the base pay of a first-year teacher to $41,220; that would mean the stipend for that teacher will be $618.30. Conversely, a teacher in their fifteenth year of teaching earns a base salary of $49,184.64 and will receive a stipend of $737.77.  

The stipend does come with a bit of a catch: staff cannot receive “extra” pay unless they provide extra services of some kind, Superintendent Charles Bradley said.  As such, to receive their stipend check, staff must participate in a professional development activity requiring study of District safety protocols and acknowledge they have reviewed those documents.  “We would be remiss in announcing this stipend without thanking our community, our PTSOs, our parents, local churches, and businesses for what they’ve done for our schools,” Bradley continued. “They are instrumental in the district’s success, and we are proud to be Mustang Broncos”

Board President, Chad Schroeder echoed Bradley’s sentiment and added that "I am amazed on a daily basis by the dedication and hard work of the staff in this school district. No matter what their official title might be, the people who show up every day for our students, go above and beyond just a job description and do whatever it takes to make sure our students are learning in a safe and caring environment. When people say 'it takes a village' I believe they are referring to the group of professional and caring individuals that make up Mustang Public Schools."
