Mrs. Harper's English Class
-
Wow!  What fun our students are having in language arts.  They are actually loving the concept of writing and the processes involved.  The second nine weeks, students will expand on their writing abilities by also giving oral reports on several concepts.  They will practice the art of presenting oral reports by working on delivery and language skills as well as looking at the grammar being used.  Our classes will continue their letter writing skills as they will not only continue writing to the troops in Afghanistan but will begin writing to pen pals in another state.  They are also writing postcards to other schools around the United States through our postcard exchange.

Mrs. Lindsey's Math Class - During the second nine weeks, students will be learning about the different types of graphs and how to analyze data using tables, graphs, and models to solve problems. They will be able to identify and describe the basic properties of figures. The students will learn to find perimeter and area of simple polygons. We will also learn to convert customary units and metric units.

Mrs. Osborne's Reading Class - In the second nine weeks we will work on fluency, comprehension, identifying various genres, and vocabulary development.  Through independent reading at home and guided reading in the classroom, students will work
towards improving their fluency and comprehension.

Mr. Morris's Science Class - Fifth grade scientists will be strategically focusing on the study of Life Science (life-cycles) during the first semester. Our class procedures follow
the route of exploring in small groups, whole class, or discovering science phenomena on an individual basis. Active classroom discussion, and brainstorming are an important part of the learning cycle - moving students toward self monitoring life skills and higher level thinking abilities.  Students will be taught "notebooking" skills that will carry on into middle and high school subjects.  Scientific terminology will be stressed this nine weeks, as well as throughout the year.  Terms are not just memorized, but applied toward concepts; therefore application test will be multiple choice, true/false and essay.  Major concepts during the first nine weeks will focus on part and functions of the cells, plant function and reproduction, as well as animal diversity.  Microscope skills and metric measurements are stressed as well.  Investigations to reinforce the scientific method are also a part of the this nine weeks.
Bonus points are given throughout the year for parent signed study guides.

Mrs. Feddersen's Social Studies Class - For the second nine weeks, we will be doing a log of Christopher Columbus.  We will also be studying explorers and colonies.  Remember, study guides should be coming home nightly and read to an adult.
